Japan has announced the winners of the Japan Cup, with Tokyo FC and Nippon-Ham Fighters set to meet in the opening round.
Japan Cup winners Japan Soccer Association (JSA) head coach Shoji Sasaki said the top two teams will face off in the quarterfinals.
Japan’s top three clubs will qualify for the next round with the winners advancing to the second round on Dec. 30.
The final round of the tournament, which runs until Jan. 12, is expected to feature two teams in the final of each group and four groups.
Four of the top five clubs will advance to the third round of play, which will be held on Jan. 18.
Nippon Ham and Tokyo FC are expected to finish in the top four of the JSA’s top division.
Japan was also expected to get into a good position in the standings in the 2018-19 season, with the top three teams advancing to a knockout stage and the fourth and final place advancing to Europe.
Tokyo FC was also the only club in the country’s top two divisions to finish the season in the championship race, earning an automatic berth to the 2019 World Cup finals.
